It’s finally here: Photographer’s i Magazine starts the revolution

As you might have noticed from the odd hints in our twitter feed, or if you read our last newsletter right to the very bottom, we in the Ilex Photo team have been working on something pretty special over the last few months. Now we can finally take the (digital) wrapping off and start shouting from the (virtual) rooftops about our new creation, the Photographer’s i Magazine, which we absolutely no qualms about calling a revolutionary departure in the world of photography magazines, and a very exciting step for us at Ilex too.

This is no mere collection of photographs or promo-piece lauding the latest photo-gadgets. This magazine concentrates on the art of image-making and features the kind of top professionals who travel the world taking photographs for a living; specialists in their various fields or sensational artists winning awards and acclaim as they break onto the scene. In the first issue you’ll find Magnum photographer Abbas, Prix de la Photographie winner Steve Simon, and many more (see a complete list here).

The Photographer’s i Magazine is available right now on iPad via the App Store and for Android Tablets via Android Marketplace, with the full length sample issue at the special discount rate of just £1.49 (or $1.99 if you’ve come to us from the USA). Before you dip your toe in, you might want to learn more at Photographer’s i Magazine‘s dedicated website.

To put together this magazine we’ve enlisted the help of some of the biggest names in the industry, including Executive Editor Marti Saltzman and Editor-in-Chief Michael Freeman. While regular readers to this site will be familiar with the work of the latter, the best way to understand Marti’s significance in the industry is to try and walk across the floor of a Trade Show with her without her bumping into 20 big names she’s worked with. Trust me, it’s can’t be done.

I could use much more space here enthusing about this project, which has us all very excited, but there’s no reason to take my word for it. You could listen to the included photographers: National Geographic‘s Bob Krist, said “It’s the future, and it’s already here”, and another, Haje Jan Kamps, called it “all manner of Awesome”. You could listen to the reviewers, who have called the app “a revaluation”, but the best thing to do is try it your yourself. Just visit the App store or Android Marketplace, download the free viewer app, then from within it download the Pilot issue for just £1.49.
