It’s been out for a while now and Jovanka Vuckovic’s ZOMBIES! An Illustrated History of the Undead is proving something of a hit amongst the horror fraternity. Don’t believe me? Have a look at some of the reviews that the book has garnered…
At bloodandvegetables.com, they call the book a “fascinating cultural history” and recommend it as “a coffin-table book to be savoured, along with a nice cold pint, while you’re waiting for the zombie apocalypse to blow over”. Meanwhile Cinesploitation reckon it’s “seriously badass”, and even highlight the quality of the paper stock – it’s nice when this kind of detail is noted, especially in such a fist-pumpingly enthusiastic way. In an unsuccessful effort to lend some nuance to the discussion, Brutally Violent and Wonderful sum the book up as “part history lesson, part cultural commentary and 100% zombie fan’s wet dream” – making me wonder if they should in fact be writing our blurbs for us.
A reader with a more sober, reflective turn of phrase is Dave over at Hellnotes.com, where Jovanka’s tome is “a lively reminder of how interesting the undead can be”; normal service is resumed at chud.com, as Jared advises that “you should get all over this book like it was candy flavored brains or brains covered in candy”. He continues “I don’t know which, I’m no expert”, but to judge by his in depth appreciation of the book’s contents, he is. Finally, over at The Trades, one R.J.Carter blots his, or possibly her, copybook by taking Jovanka for a man (how?) but redeems him-, or possibly her-, self by calling the book “indispensible”. So we’ll let him, or possibly her, off.
If you’ve got anything to add to the above, please leave us a link or a comment – it would be great to hear from you. And if you’re reading this in the US or Canada, you will find the book published (on the same “hefty paper stock” previously mentioned) by the fine folk at St Martin’s Press.

What about a follow up with Aliens? (I just saw Simon Pegg’s “Paul”…)
